In the recent times there has been a paradigm shift in the generation,
processing, dissemination and utilization of information. The shift has
primarily been influenced by the developments in the field of computer and
communication technology. Because of this library and information professionals
are on constant pressure to modernize their libraries and upgrade their
professional skills. Organizations cannot really recruit new professionals for
every specialization that emerge, and thus the existing staff has to be trained
through effective staff development programmers. The present book endeavors to
discuss the challenges brought out by the technology. competencies required, and
strategies to train manpower, ways to develop effective programmers and various
efforts in this direction in a cohesive manner. the approach has been that of
documenting the theories, processes and opinions of experts in the field of
staff training and development. the aim is to highlight important issues before
us to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The book has 14 chapters
