520 _aSince the independence of India, there has been a quantitative expansion in the field of education in terms of an explosion in the number of students. Consequently the number of teachers have also increased substantially. The emerging aims of education include equipping all the citizens to lead a better life, providing equal opportunities and basic amenities for all Indian citizens irrespective of caste, creed, colour or locality. As per the new 20 point programme, a threefold approach has been envisaged to arrest illiteracy through :- (1) ensuring 100 percent enrolment as 5+ in schools and (2) preventing drop outs from the lower primary, stage and to (3) wipe out illiteracy at least from the age range 15-35 by March 1990, giving place of priority to women, SC and ST and other deprived sections.
