Volume 1 of Ballantyne's "Synopsis of Science" was designed as an educational tool to introduce his Indian pupils to Western science, specifically by framing it within the familiar philosophical structure of the Nyaya school of Hindu philosophy. Ballantyne, an orientalist who taught in India for many years, had a deep respect for Nyaya philosophy and saw its logical and epistemological framework as an effective bridge for transmitting Western scientific concepts.
