Summary: The resources of a university research library are available to the students, faculty, university research staff, and visiting scholars. The materials and services of a research library in a public library system are open to the public under the regulations and conditions established by the particular library. Use of some independent research libraries is restricted to advanced scholars and is permitted only by special arrangement; other are open to the public under regulations limiting the locale in which the materials can be used. Library science is an interdisciplinary science incorporating the humanities, law and applied science to study topics related to libraries, the collection, organisation, preservation and dissemination of information resources, and the political economy of information. Historically, library science has also included archival science. "The distinction between a library and an archive is relatively modern". In the beginning of the 21st century one tendency has been to drop the term "library" and to speak about information departments or 1-schools.There has also been an attempt to revive the concept of documentation and speak of Library, information and documentation studies (or science). Another tendency, for example in Sweden, is to merge the fields of Archival science, Library science and Museology to develop an integrated field: Archival, Library and Museum studies. The present book discusses the status, role and the effectiveness of academic library system in a changing world.
