Summary: The public has called for a cheap edition of my “Ruined Cities of Ceylon.” This is, of course, gratifying to me; but it is with some regret that I find myself compelled to adopt a different process of illustration in order to cheapen the work. I trust, however, that the collotypes here used will be found adequate for the purpose of giving a realistic idea of the present state of the ruins. I have introduced three additional illustrations of work which has been completed since my first edition was published. For one of these, the Buddhist railing at Anuradhapura, I am indebted to Mr. Arthur E. Scovell; and for the others to Mr. W. L. H. Skeen. With these exceptions the illustrations are from my own photographs taken in the year 1896.
